august 2010 news
open studios

with recently completing the creative connections pilot project for the royal opera house, one of the last residential days saw myself lead a 2 figure body cast/drape workshop. a powerful image was created and I was reminded of the magic of the materials and process. thanks go to the co-creators of the sculpture that we left in the middle of the formal lawn of the hotel.

august is quiet within my consultancy life, the art-world seemingly going on holiday like some historical industry shutting down for the month, giving their ‘workers’ respite from the long hours and poor conditions. allowing me to escape to the studio.

surfaces and my language of marks prevails, within the daily collections and larger pieces. however with the recent experiences of getting ‘stuff’ under my nails, thoughts move towards form. i will post to flickr developments over the coming weeks as I complete work towards the collection that i will take to the brighton art fair over the 16th - 19th september.

open studios
open studios was a huge success with good visitor numbers and sales, commissions were received from previous buyers and preparations in the studio are well under way for brighton art fair on the 16th - 19th september.

i am working with an emerging sculptor presently that i met through my work for the royal opera house, alex mcintyre. her work can be seen under critical dialogues here. i recently had the pleasure of visiting her studio in north london to see and connect to the physical experiences of approaching and sharing the intimate space with her work. alex has written a testimonial for me and can be found here.

my work continues with eleanor long and she also has written a testimonial, found here. eleanor works with glass and light and i am supporting her on developing a 'pop up' project to raise her profile and create a dialogue between herself, her work and her audiences of; architects, designers and private and commercial clients.

june 2010 news
open studios
new work, warmer palette and new visitors on a warm weekend in june. a headline summary on the event so far. this month sees the doors of dawlton barn open with new work being pushed forward with a rigour and passion to consolidate my vocabulary. i was told of the japanese ceramicist shoji hamada, who obsessed with a repeating a set of marks. it was said of him that; "his brushwork contains immense energy and unfettered freedom, his patterns, although controlled and often visually complex; seem to have been born in a moment of creative energy." i have a summer to contemplate this in my studio ahead of brighton and fulham palace.

with whatever the weather this months holds for us why not take advantage of one of the 15 artist and maker trails available for download here and spend a couple of hours visiting their studios, I can be found on the Ashford South trail. see you in the studio.

work in the studio
work in the studio is progressing well with the preparation of the surfaces of the larger works almost complete. the layering of the gesso and smoothing down and retouching is seductive. i cannot wait to make the first marks. as a result of the time consumed on this process i am deferring the '@home' show until the new year.
i amalso putting the details and dates together for the short courses in 2010. see the study page for a synopsis and email me for the course brochures and booking forms. early registration and booking recommended and early bird discounts offered.

september news
brighton art fair 2009
brighton art fair 2009 was a great success. lots of encouraging conversations, contacts made within the industry and new clients and work selling. the small gesso blocks proving very collectable with buyers selecting a single trophy item or curating a selection. the new large gesso panels (50x50cm) stole the show with their seductive marks and tactile satin surface of milk and wax glaze. i am presently working in the studio scaling this up larger, circa 1 metre and 1.5 metre square for an “@home” show in london in december. contact me for more information.
gallery pages updated with new work! sales and commissions now undertaken through email enquiries.

open studio success
my first open studios was a great success seeing over 100 people make their way through the narrow lanes and pass the idyllic views and gastro pubs to end at my studio door. work sold and i have been commissioned to paint a series of 9 small gesso and linen squares. feedback was very positive and it was a pleasure to meet all the seos committee members who popped in to introduce themselves. thank you.i am happy to say that i am standing for the role as chair for the south east open studios and trust that successful election permitting, i will be serving the organisation and members to my best ability over the coming years.
